Ahh… Here at the Style File we’re in particularly high spirits today, so we’ll share a secret that’s just too good to keep a lid on:

Your mood changes when different colors are used around the house. Really. Studies show that certain colors evoke specific emotions in people. One color can make you feel calm while another makes you feel excited, powerful, or even hungry. If you are looking to create a specific mood in a room consider including the color that promotes the desired mood in your decor, either by painting the walls or incorporating it through decorative elements:

Red
Red provokes feelings of excitement, passion, and hunger. Try red floral arrangements or dishes in the dining room, a red wall in a game room, or if you’re feeling daring, red throw pillows (or fuzzy cuffs) in the boudoir.

Green
Green is the color of grass and leaves and other nature-like things. The calming effect of green is a great idea for a bedroom wall or an entryway door that says, “you are now entering an oasis of style”.

Blue
Like green, blue is found in nature and has a tranquilizing affect on people. Blue towels in a bathroom can create a spa-like feel, while a sky blue ceiling in the home office would make an inbox full of emails feel like a walk in the park.

Orange
Think red, but less intense. Orange demands attention and creates a feeling of energy. Try using shades of it in places where people gather for conversation. Think orange curtains in the living room or a modern area rug with orange elements in the dining room.

Black
Wanna feel powerful, sexy, or mysterious? Black’s the way to go. A black wall behind a headboard is unexpected, and a row of identical black storage containers in the kitchen suggests that you mean business when it comes to cooking.

Yellow
We don’t know about anyone else, but nothing makes us feel more creative and child-like than the color of the sun. Try yellow in the laundry area or workout room and see if it doesn’t make your hard work feel like it requires a little less effort.

White
White light is created when all colors from the spectrum are blended equally. The same feeling of harmonious togetherness is imparted through the use of white furniture, bookshelves, and vases. In fact, any white focal point against an intensely colored background will feel clean and orderly.
