A couple years ago we decided to put some Lucky Bamboo in our living room. At the time it seemed like everyone had it in their homes and we didn’t want to miss out on the trend (or an opportunity for good fortune). Well many months and a lot of losing lotto tickets later we don’t feel much luckier. And to be honest, Lucky Bamboo is boring us. So we replaced it with black bamboo. It was an easy foliage fix and looks amazing against our turquoise hallway.

Naturally, this got us thinking about other unusual plants we could use for home décor. Here are some of our (and nature’s) best ideas:

Plant mats of wheat grass in rectangular, deep glass containers. Place one in each window and see if the grass really is greener on the other sill.

Out with the marigold, in with the new. Replace those everyday flowers with some unique stems, like a vase full of bright yellow Craspedia. We love how those flower heads create an instant focal point.

Go into the wild with a combination of Prairie Willows and dune grass in a short pot. For a stylish finish, top the dirt with black stones of different sizes.

Thanks to Mother Nature, our home is looking quite spruce now, if we may say so. Let us know what unusual plants you’ve added to your décor. Spider plants need not apply.
