April 13th, 2009

Our laundry area used to be our dirty little secret. We have to admit, we hated doing laundry Like “going to prison for a few hours a week” dread. And form fitting function; our laundry space looked the part. It was dark, disorganized, and – outside of the addition of our awesome new front-load laundry pair – generally lacked any inviting features.

Something had to give. But dreadful as it was, we couldn’t stop cleaning our clothes (we kinda like having friends). So we rolled up our sleeves and took a few small (read: inexpensive) steps towards turning our spin cycle prison into a white towel detention facility.

First we addressed the “dark” part: The single bare bulb gave the place the feeling of an interrogation room, so we replaced it with an inexpensive LED track light. Now it’s much brighter and we’re helping to save the planet – a nice bonus.

Feeling inspired and energized, we then tackled the issue of organization: All of the cleaning supplies were cluttered on top of the dryer, making it a real pain when we wanted to sort or fold. We did a little shopping and found Laundry 1-2-3™ pedestals with storage drawers, which were perfect in two ways. The pedestals raised our laundry pair about 15” off of the ground – just enough to make the task of loading and unloading feel less like climbing into a crawlspace, and the storage drawers were large enough to keep the laundry supplies together and out of the way. Cluttered no more!

We also got some attractive organizers for the laundry room shelves so it now looks more like a display case than a junk room. In less time than it took to finish two loads, we transformed the place we dreaded going into a place we wouldn’t mind visiting more often. Doing laundry is still a bit of a chore, but much like mountain climbing – or digging out of jail with a spoon, as it were – the improved view is now well worth the effort.
