A Bedtime Story

Once upon a time, there was a magic space where people could go to get away from the world. There were no e-mails allowed and some spaces didn’t even have TVs. Sound like an imaginary land far, far away? It isn’t; it is in your home. However, your bedroom has likely morphed into a space where you crash at night instead of a sanctuary you can visit at any time.
Bedrooms can be a tricky place for design. If you have a small room but enjoy a king-size bed, you probably don’t have room for other furniture, which can make keeping your room organized a difficult task.
Start off by drawing your room to scale on several pieces of paper. Include windows, doors and other architectural elements to your room. This will help you figure out where your furniture can fit without having to muscle it around the room. Develop a list of things you like and dislike in your bedroom. For instance, do you like the view of the neighborhood from a certain window or do you dislike the street light that shines in at night? This list will also help you develop ideas of what you’d like to do with your room, such as installing darkening shades to block out that annoying street light.
Once you’ve decided how you want your room configured, think about the colors and textures you currently have in the room and what you’d like to change. Is your sage bedroom too dark during the day? Try painting it a creamy color to lighten the room. Add some chenille throw pillows to your bed to make it an inviting place to nap. Do you like to read but have no light? Place a chair and ottoman near a window or in a corner with a lamp to create a quiet place to read. Look through your storage room and use a weekend to recover the chair and ottoman.
Your bedroom should be about you and reflect the colors, patterns and textures you enjoy the most. You may be surprised at the quality of rest you’ll get once you give your bedroom the makeover it deserves. After all, you and your bedroom should live happily ever after.
